What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient scientific discipline which prepares the individual for obtaining higher stages of self and universal consciousness.
The word 'Yoga' comes from the Sanskrit root term 'Yuj' which means 'to join'. This unity or joining is described in spiritual terms as the union of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness. On a more practical level, yoga is a means of balancing and harmonising the body, mind and emotions.
Hatha Yoga
There are many paths of Yoga, including Hatha Yoga which is a branch of Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga and Bhakti Yoga.
The word 'Hatha' is based on the Sanskrit words 'Ha' which means 'sun' and 'Tha' which means 'moon' - the combination of both which represents the principals of balance and harmony.
Hatha Yoga therefore focuses on harmonising the body and mind through a range of practices including Kriyas (cleansing practices), Asanas (physcial postures), Pranayama (breathing techniques), Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation) and meditation.
